前回２回の記事で、春に関する表現をご紹介してきましたが、今回は、世界の作家が残した春に関する英語の名言をいくつかご紹介させていただきます。今回ご紹介する言葉は、決して有名なものではありませんが、言葉が美しく、本質をついたものを選びました。これらの言葉から「春」が世界中の人々にどんなに多くのことをもたらしているかを感じていただければと思います。言葉の美しさを失わせないために直訳は掲載せず意味合いを説明しています。
Nostalgia in reverse, the longing for yet another strange land, grew especially strong in spring.
ロシアで生まれロシア革命後西欧へ亡命、そしてアメリカヘ帰化したロシアの小説家Vladimir Nabokov（ウラジーミル・ナボコフ）の重みのある言葉です。この言葉には「春は未来に目を向ける季節である。そして過去をあれこれ考えることが少なくなる（Springtime is when people look to the future. And spend less time pondering the past.)」という意味が含まれています。
In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.
カナダの作家Margaret Atwood（マーガレット・アトウッド）の言葉です。「暖かい季節になったら外に出て汚れるまで遊ぶべき(Importance of playing outside and how it is OK and natural for children to get dirty as the weather becomes warmer)」という意味合いがあります。
I enjoy the spring more than the autumn now. One does, I think, as one gets older.
イギリスの作家 Virginia Woolf（ヴァージニア・ウルフ）の言葉です。「我々はみな死に行く運命にある。年を重ねるにつれ、秋が来ることで人はいつかは亡くなることを思い出してしまう（As we get older, autumn reminds us more and more that we will one day pass away)」といった意味を含み、「（年を重ねた）今、秋より春を楽しんでいる」ということになります。
Spring is the time of plans and projects.
ロシアの小説家Leo Tolstoy（レオ・トルストイ）の言葉です。これは言葉通りで、「春には新しいことが始まったり、新しい何かが待ち受けていたりする」という意味になります。
