英文が「伝わっているようで伝わらない」理由とは
豊富なボキャブラリーを持ち、英語で日記やジャーナルをすらすら書ける人でも、報告文や意見を述べるエッセイになると、「文法や意味は正しいのに、なぜか弱い」と感じられることがよくあります。さらに、資格試験のライティングでも、スコアが中級レベル以上に伸び悩むケースは少なくありません。
その原因の一つがvague adjectives(あいまいな形容詞)です。
vague adjectivesとは？
vague adjectives とは、意味の範囲が広すぎて具体的なイメージが伝わらない形容詞 のことです。代表的なものには、次のような語があります。
good / bad / big / nice / interesting / important

なぜ vague adjectives は文章を弱くするのか
たとえば、次の文を見てみましょう。
I think studying abroad is very good for students.
It is a good experience and gives students good opportunities.
文法的には正しく、意味もある程度は伝わります。しかし good for students や good experienceでは、「何が、なぜ良いのか」が具体的に伝わりません。そのため、個人の感想レベルの文章に見えてしまいます。
より説得力のある文章にするには上記の“vague adjectives” goodを具体的な別表現に書き換えます。
I think studying abroad is valuable for students because it helps them develop independence and understand different cultures. These experiences can be beneficial for their future carriers.

一見すると自然で、英語としても問題ありません。しかし、何がどう重要なのかが全く見えてきません。
以下のように具体性を加えることで、なぜ他の問題より重要なのか？どんな影響があるのか？が読み取れるようになります。
It is essential for governments to consider environmental issues when making policies, because these decisions directly affect public health and long-term economic stability. In particular, environmental protection plays a crucial role in preventing climate-related disasters and reducing future social costs.
